Me Myself and I — A review about self-preservation

Gerald Earl Gillum, aka G- Eazy, is an American rapper and a music producer who’s now reached the pinnacle of his success through his music career. His critically acclaimed song Me Myself and I always fascinated me. I thought of going deep into this song. So let’s take a look at how he came across to sing this song.

One day G- Eazy was looking out the window while sipping a cup of tea. He played a note on the piano saying ‘Oh, It’s Just Me Myself and I’. And suddenly felt like putting his deep imagination into a song.

The song starts with talking with his foreign girlfriend in a car — they’re about to go to a party. He wants to stay inside the house, wants to be alone with her. She tells him to trust her. As they enter the house, a large gang of friends and fans wait there for him. Oh, and it’s his birthday. They want to ‘Surprise!’ him.

Then something weird happens. He separates into two. Oneself is himself who craves fame. That self puts on a fake smile and try to blend in with the party. Other self gets away from this craziness and flee into the bathroom. His truer self says to himself sarcastically, ‘ Surprise, Surprise another night of turn out!’

The song starts with

“Oh, it’s just me, myself and I

Solo ride until I die

Cause I got me for life

(Got me for life, yeah)

Oh, I don’t need a hand to hold

Even when the night is cold

I got that fire in my soul.”

I think here G-Eazy addresses himself. And he used to hang on to people, expecting so much from them, but he didn’t have any control over them, and in the end, ‘It’s just he himself and he’ because yourself can’t be separated from yourself. You always have you.

And as far as I can see, I just need privacy

Plus, a whole lot of tree f**k all this modesty

I just need space to do me get a world that they’re tryna see

A stellar max flow right beside of me

A Ferrari I’m buyin’ three

A closet of Saint Laurent, get what I want when I want

Cause hunger is driving me, yeah

G-Eazy is looming through the party singing this verse. We can see his energy and rage in his rapping here. He says how much he’s achieved in his career and how rich he’s become thanks to his independence and privacy. He’s become an introvert on the inside, but physically he’s dealing with the people around him. He’s not just there. He implies it’s a necessary evil to prioritize his needs over others.

I just need to be alone, I just need to be at home

Understand what I’m speaking on if time is money I need a loan

But regardless I’ll always keep keepin’ on

F**k fake friends, we don’t take L’s we just make M’s

While y’all follow, we just make trends

I’m right back to work when that break ends

He sees how precious time is. Through the sophistication of friendships he encountered throughout his career, many alliances have not been honest or productive. Ultimately that is a waste of time, And even if you are willing, most people won’t give you their time for free. When others are busy partying, he’s out there using his energy to excel in his career.

I don’t need anything to get me through the night

Just the beat that’s in my heart

Yeah, it’s keeping me alive

(Keeps me alive)

I don’t need anything to make me satisfied (you know)

’Cause the music fills me good and it gets me every time

You can cling on to people all you want. But at the end of the day, it’s your and your only responsibility to pave the way for yourself. Remember that the beat of your heart, it’s a constant reminder that you’re awesome.

Now the partying G-Eazy walks onto the rooftop.

Yeah, and I don’t like talking to strangers

So get the f**k off me I’m anxious

I’m tryna be cool but I might just go ape s**t

Say f**k y’all to all of y’all faces

It changes though now that I’m famous

Everyone knows how this lifestyle is dangerous

But I love it the rush is amazing

Celebrate nightly and everyone rages

For children, parents always say, “Don’t talk to strangers.” G- Eazy is taking this advice for himself. But what if you are blending in with them, talking with them. But actually is too busy to think too much about them. I think G-Eazy here is too busy to notice them.

I found how to cope with my anger

I’m swimming in money

Swimming in liquor my liver is muddy

But it’s all good I’m still sippin’ this bubbly

This shit is lovely, this shit ain’t random, I didn’t get lucky

Made it right here ’cause I’m sick with it Cudi

They all take the money for granted

But don’t want to work for now tell me, isn’t it funny?

He’s proud of his accomplishments. He knows his hard work has increased his luck. He’s had too much partying and drinking. But he takes a moment to appreciate himself for his accomplishments.

Then the whole set turns into a birthday song. His fans sing him happy birthday, and he winks at them. Then the video shows his truer self hiding in the bathroom talking to another truer self. The first self says sarcastically, ‘Haaappy Birthdaaay tooo yoou’. In reply, Second self says, ‘I can’t take you seriously right now. You asked for this. All of these people showed up for you. You’re complaining about it now?’ This guy has some issues xD. His many selves start to talk with each other, saying that he actually asked for all of this when he was poor. But when finally he’s become rich and successful, he defies them. Isn’t that ironic? I lost count of how many G-Eazy selves are showing up here. An introvert G-Eazy self tells sarcastically ‘Happy Birthday Gerald!’ Drops the mic.

His extrovert self stays at the party enjoying a drink while his truer self gets away from all that madness and looks at the party for one last time in despair. And gets into his brand new black Chevrolet and drives into the night alone. Then the video goes into retrospect, showing both the party and the lonely G-Eazy. Showing what he’s missing out or not.

Yeah, lonely nights I laid awake

Pray to the Lord, my soul to take

My heart’s become too cold to break

Know I’m great but I’m broke as hell

Having dreams that I’m folding cake

All my life I’ve been told to wait

But I’mma get it now it’s no debate

Damn, this guy has some issues! xD Being alone can be really empowering. But at the same time, it can be hard too. He’s like someone who had a burning passion for music and worked really hard with everything he had. And when once he’s achieved success, he hated it. This also shows that fame and money can have a darker side too.

Most of the songs we hear in Sri Lanka are about love, relationships, or something along those lines. But this song “Me, Myself, and I by G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha” has gone to a whole new level. I think this song motivates individuals to be independent in terms of their thinking too.

This is the first review by me; I hope you guys liked it. :)
